This usually doesn't work this way, I need to know other info. It's best if I know who it's for, what they want to use it for, and if possible, a general price range. I'll look for these prices and comparable, but finding prices isn't usually what I do best, it's finding the product :)....a lot of times people don't realize that they might be looking at the wrong thing.
Ok, without knowing any other information, this is what I've come up with. You asked about Dells, so I only looked at Dells. There was no mention of a monitor so I assumed that wasn't necessary....having said that, let me be blunt. I wouldn't purchase either of those pc's. They are both pretty entry level pcs with antiquated processor technology, and when you configure them with the memory and storage you have listed, it they still both come out to $509+ tx and shipping. There are much better options for not much more money that will be more enjoyable for a longer time.
I found 2 that would be better choices:
1. Dell 580 intel core i3-530 for $549. The Core i"x" is the newest fastest line of processors for computers. These processors also allow faster memory, DDR3 vs the older DDR2. To me the modest price increase is a no-brainer. 4GB DDR3 ram, 640GB hard drive.
2. Dell Studio XPS 8000. Intel Core i5-750 for $599. It is normally $754, 175 off right now, only until March 12th. This is my favorite and the best bang for your buck around right now. This is a much faster computer, with a nicer looking case with media card slots as well as an indention on the top of the case with usb ports for charging phones, ipods, etc. 3GB DDR3(I do think 3GB is enough), 500GB hard drive, 1GB video card(much better for games and movies)...includes star trek movie and game on a 4gb flash drive for some reason.
I looked up the various processors on a benchmark site. Real world performance could be different based on other factors, but this at least gave me an idea of how much of a speed difference there was in the older vs newer technology.
The computers and their respective processors, followed by their scores(higher is better):
Dell 546, athlon le-1660 2.8: 758
Dell 560 e5400 dual core 2.7: 1796
Dell 580 Core i-530 2.93: 2613
Dell Studio XPS 8000 i5-750: 4219
As you can see the top performing i5 soundly beats the older athlon 2.8, with only a $90 price difference, $599-$509.
Here is a link to a review for the 8000 as well, it's a slightly different configuration but it will give you an idea of the look and performance of the computer: Studio XPS 8000 Review
Anyway, after all is said and done, I would not look any lower than the 580. It is available here: dell 580 I would also click on the $20 hard drive upgrade.
HOWEVER, with the current $175 off of the Studio XPS 8000, I don't think I could pass up on it, not for such a small difference in price. Link: Studio XPS 800
Do you have a better thought than Dell? I just looked at the Dells because they send me sale emails all the time.
Basically I use my home computer for surfing the internet, storing pictures (not a whole lot of pictures....maybe 1k or so, probably less), playing games like Solitaire and card games. I also use it when I telework once a week using gotomypc. I have yet to watch a movie on my computer. I do have a monitor but was thinking of upgrading to a 23" one since Dell had them 40% off.
Looking for desktop....Dell Inspiron 546 with 2.8ghz AMD Athlon; 4GB memory; 750GB sata ATA hard drive;
ReplyDeleteor Dell Inspiron 560 with intel Pentium dual core E5400; 6GB dual channel memory; 640GB Serial ATA hard Drive.
Compare and best prices/locations.

Thanks for your help and time.
Monitor could change things a little bit, I'll check back in today...
